Delaying menstruation using medication is an easy and safe option taken by many women to avoid the inconvenience and common symptoms that many suffer during their period. The option to delay a period is often used around exams, weddings or travel.
What is Norethisterone
Norethisterone is a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone that regulates menstruation. By taking Norethisterone, you can postpone your period for special occasions, travel, exams or other personal reasons.
How to use Norethisterone
You’ll need to start taking Norethisterone three days before the onset of menstruation. Take one tablet three times a day for as long as you want to delay your period. You can take Norethisterone up to a maximum of 10-14 days. Your period should start 2-3 days after you stop taking the medication. Before starting, you must read the manufacturer's leaflet supplied with your Norethisterone tablets.
Who can use Norethisterone
Norethisterone is typically recommended for women who aren’t using hormonal contraceptives and have a regular menstrual cycle. Before starting Norethisterone, our pharmacist will discuss your situation with you to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for you to use. If you have a history of blood clots, liver disease, or certain other health conditions then Norethisterone might not be suitable for you.
Is Norethisterone safe?
Occasional use is not believed to cause any long-term health or fertility issues but frequent or prolonged use can lead to side effects or other health concerns (see below). During your consultation, your pharmacists will be able to answer your questions on safe use based on your individual circumstances.
