What are our customers saying?

Frequently asked questions

01

Can I get the contraceptive pill without seeing a GP?

Yes. Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, our pharmacists can supply and manage the contraceptive pill without you needing a GP appointment. You complete a short online consultation and, if it's suitable for you, your pill is arranged and delivered - no GP referral required.

02

Is contraception from My Local Surgery free?

Yes. Routine NHS contraception consultations through the Pharmacy Contraception Service are free, and there is no prescription charge for the contraceptive pill on the NHS. You only pay if you choose a private service or a treatment that falls outside NHS cover.

03

Can a pharmacist prescribe my contraception?

Yes. Pharmacists can already start, continue and manage routine oral contraception under the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service. From Autumn 2026, independent prescribing is being expanded across community pharmacy under the Government's £340 million deal - and My Local Surgery's network already includes independent prescribers, so you can speak to a qualified prescriber now.

04

Can I start the pill for the first time, or only get a repeat?

Both. Our pharmacists can start you on the combined or progestogen-only pill for the first time, switch you to a different pill if your current one isn't right, or set up an ongoing repeat supply.

05

Which types of contraception are covered?

The service covers oral contraception - the combined pill and the progestogen-only ("mini") pill - including starting, switching and repeat supplies. We can also provide emergency contraception (the morning-after pill). For methods such as the coil, implant or injection you may be referred to a local clinic.

06

Is the morning-after pill free?

Yes. Emergency contraception (the morning-after pill) is available free of charge through the NHS at participating pharmacies. If you need it urgently, start an emergency contraception consultation and we'll help you as quickly as possible - it's most effective when taken soon after unprotected sex.

07

How quickly will my contraception arrive?

After your consultation, suitable contraception is dispatched discreetly to your door, usually with next-working-day delivery. There are no pharmacy queues and no waiting rooms.

08

Is the consultation private and confidential?

Yes. Your consultation takes place over a short, private video call with a qualified pharmacist, and everything is handled confidentially. There are no awkward front-desk conversations.

09

Do I need to tell my GP?

You don't have to arrange anything through your GP to use the service. With your consent, we can share relevant details with your GP record so your care stays joined up, but the consultation and supply happen entirely through My Local Surgery.

10

Who can use the service?

The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is available to people in England. During your consultation the pharmacist will check that your chosen contraception is safe and suitable for you, based on your health and medical history.

11

Can I switch from my current pill to a different one?

Yes. If your current contraceptive pill is causing side effects or simply isn't right for you, our pharmacist can review it and switch you to a more suitable option - without waiting for a GP appointment.

12

What if the pill isn't suitable for me?

If oral contraception isn't right for you, the pharmacist will explain your options and, where appropriate, signpost or refer you to a local sexual health or contraception clinic for methods like the coil, implant or injection.
